Shayla Breaks Down to Arby: You Were the Perfect Man… I Know Kai is Yours! πŸ”₯

[Scene opens in Shayla’s living room. Papers are stacked on the table. The air feels heavy.]

Shayla: Hi.
Arby: Hey.
Shayla: What’s up? Um… come in.
Arby: You sure?
Shayla: Arby, you literally have to get these notarized. You can come into my house. It’s not that big of a deal.

[He steps inside, looking around briefly.]

Shayla: Thank you for coming over on such short notice. I really appreciate you. So… all you have to do is sign the paper. Anthony’s already signed, so it’s basically official. I’ll give the paper to my attorney, she’ll get us a court date, and then… it’s done. But I just need your signature so we can start the process quickly.

Arby: Yeah, I got somewhere to be, so… where the papers at?

Shayla: Wait—before we go through this process… I just want to say again how sorry I am to you.

Arby: Shayla—

Shayla: No, listen. You really were a good man to me. I know you would’ve been a great father to my son. I know you wanted that, and I’m sorry I put you through all this.

Arby: Shayla, come on now—

Shayla: No, I mean it. I never want you to think it was something you did wrong. It wasn’t. You were perfect to me. Sometimes… I do wish Kai was yours.

[Arby freezes, his expression hard to read.]

Arby: …That’s real.

Shayla: I just needed to keep it real with you.

Arby: And I ain’t judging you. It’s over and done. I just… don’t want to keep reliving it. I’m done with all that.

Shayla: That’s fair. I just—sometimes when things happen, we blame ourselves. But this was never on you.

Arby: Yeah. I hear you. Now… you got that paper?

[Shayla nods reluctantly and hands it over.]

Shayla: Here.

[A knock at the door. The notary enters.]

Notary: Hi, how are you?
Arby: I’m good.
Notary: Nice to meet you. I’ll just need to see your ID so we can notarize the papers. Shayla’s already signed her part, so… you’re going to sign right here.

[Arby signs. The notary writes quickly.]

Notary: All right, I’ll fill in this section and notarize it. It’ll take about 30 to 45 days.

Arby: All right. Thank you.

Notary: You’re welcome.

[The notary leaves. A long silence hangs between Shayla and Arby.]

Shayla: I guess… that’s it.

Arby: Yeah. Guess so.

Shayla: Arby…

Arby: Shayla, don’t. I’m not mad. I’m just… done.

[He walks toward the door. She watches him go, her eyes glassy. The papers sit on the table, but her heart feels heavier than ever.]
