Anthony:
(quietly closing the door)
He’s not here?

Shayla:
Keep your voice down. He’s sleeping.

Anthony:
Sh, man, my baby. Look, Shayla—if you need me to pick him up this late, you need to hit me up a little earlier.

Shayla:
(folding her arms, eyes sharp)
Well, I didn’t know I’d need you earlier, Anthony. Parenting doesn’t follow your schedule.

Anthony:
I’m not trying to hear all that right now.

Shayla:
Of course, you’re not. Because guess what? You’re not the prominent parent—I am. I deal with the tantrums, the late-night cries, the doctor’s visits. You swoop in when it’s convenient, and you don’t even see the struggles I go through when you’re not here.

Anthony:
That’s not fair, Shayla. I show up when I can. Don’t act like I’m not here at all.

Shayla:
(voice rising but controlled, so she doesn’t wake Kai)
Everybody can’t just be laid up, Anthony. You walk in and out like this is optional. Meanwhile, I’m holding everything together.

Anthony:
Look—if you need me later, just let me know ahead of time. That’s all I’m saying.

Shayla:
That’s all you’re saying? That’s all you ever say. “Let me know ahead of time.” Like parenting is a scheduled pickup.

Anthony:
Do you need anything else tonight? He should be good.

Shayla:
No, I don’t need anything else. But I need you to hear this. When Kai gets older, he’s going to resent you.

Anthony:
(taken aback, frowning)
Resent me?

Shayla:
Yes. You know the way you feel about your father? That empty space you carry inside you? That’s how Kai is going to feel about you. You don’t think he can feel this? The tension between us, the absence, the difference in his life?

Anthony:
Shayla, don’t put that on me—

Shayla:
No, listen. You didn’t care how this would impact him. You thought about yourself, your happiness. Meanwhile, this tiny innocent Black boy looks up to you like you’re his superhero. And what do you do? You turn your back on him—for what?

Anthony:
(staring, silent)

Shayla:
A marriage? A marriage that’s already in shambles? You’d leave him to be with a woman who embarrassed you? Really?

Anthony:

Anthony:
(after a pause, quietly)
…Is that all?

Shayla:
That’s all you can offer tonight, isn’t it?

(She walks over to Kai’s room door, peeking inside tenderly.)

Shayla:
I love you, Kai. Mommy’s right here. I’ll always take care of you. I’ll never leave your side.

(Anthony looks on, guilt heavy in his eyes, but says nothing.)
