Scene: Amber and Anthony are lounging on the couch. Amber is massaging Anthony’s shoulders when Shayla walks in holding a notebook. Tension fills the room immediately.

Shayla: (clearing throat) Anthony, can I talk to you for a second? It’s about Kai.

Anthony: (sits up, glances at Amber, then back at Shayla) Go ahead. What’s going on?

Amber: (half-smiling) Should I give y’all the room, or…?

Shayla: (sharp) No. You can stay. This involves his son.

Anthony: (adjusts his seat, serious) Okay. What’s up?

Shayla: (firm) I need you to come with me tomorrow to check the details for Kai’s birthday party. The venue, the catering, the decorations — I need your help making sure everything’s right.

Anthony: (confused) Why do I need to come? You can handle that. Why not take your mom or a friend?

Shayla: (snaps) Because you’re his father, Anthony! This is his first birthday, and I want you there with me. You’re good at handling business, negotiations, and numbers. I need your support.

Amber: (scoffs, shaking her head) It’s just a one-year-old birthday, Shayla. You acting like it’s the Golden Globes.

Shayla: (glares at Amber) Stay out of this. You don’t understand what it means for a child to have both parents show effort.

Anthony: (sighs) Shayla, it’s a party. He’s not even gonna remember it. You can take care of this, you’re good at that stuff.

Shayla: (voice rising) So you think his first birthday isn’t important? You think because he won’t remember it, you don’t have to show up? This is your son! He only gets ONE first birthday!

Anthony: (coldly) I’m not coming, Shayla.

Shayla: (stunned) What?

Anthony: (shaking head) I said I’m not coming with you to check on anything for Kai’s party. I got other important things I need to do.

Shayla: (outraged) More important than your son?! Are you serious right now?

Amber: (under her breath with a smirk) Wow…

Shayla: (turns to Amber) Oh, you think this is funny? You sitting here rubbing his back while he tells me his child isn’t important?

Anthony: (stands up, frustrated) Don’t twist my words, Shayla. I didn’t say he’s not important. I just got things I need to handle tomorrow. You’re capable of handling a party without me.

Shayla: (shaking head, voice breaking) You always got “things to handle.” Always something more important than being a father. I can’t believe you’re choosing everything else over your own son’s milestone.

Anthony: (firm, cutting her off) I said what I said. I’m not going.

Shayla: (tears welling, whispers) Wow. Just… wow.

Amber: (leans back, satisfied) Guess decision’s made then.

Shayla: (storms out) When Kai asks where his father was for his first birthday planning, I’ll make sure he knows the truth.

Anthony: (rubs his face, frustrated, mutters) Man…
